Most visitors brace for the cost of parking, which is the wrong thing to worry about. On weekends and after 4 p.m. on weekdays, most of Stanford’s lots are free. What they are not, on the days that matter, is empty.

On a graduation morning, the spaces closest to the Quad and the stadium are gone well before anyone lines up, and what is left sits a long walk away.

This is where the parent who flew in for the ceremony feels it most. You get one chance to watch your graduate walk, and you do not want it riding on a wrong turn off El Camino Real or a slow lap of a full lot while the processional begins.

Which Ride Suits Your Visit?

From Highway 101, University Avenue runs west and becomes Palm Drive the moment it crosses El Camino Real; from the south, Sand Hill Road brings you off Interstate 280. A quiet Tuesday lets you pull up almost anywhere, while a commencement, a Reunion Homecoming, or a Cardinal game turns those same streets into a slow shuffle of arriving cars.

Game days are their own puzzle, and bringing a whole team or alumni group in on our Stanford charter bus means one vehicle to get to and from the stadium. Because we run these approaches week in and week out, we can read which one is moving and time your arrival to it rather than to the map.

Many of you land somewhere first. San Francisco International sits about 20 miles north and San Jose Mineta roughly 20 miles south, and a Sacramento start is a couple of hours out. Caltrain gets you to the campus edge, but it leaves you at the platform with the campus still to cross, whereas we track the flight and coordinate the airport pickup around the actual arrival.
